At one point the angels led me to a Canadian man who was an alchemist and who, amongst other things, was actually turning mercury into gold (though it can also be done from lead, which is more difficult). I studied alchemy for two years with him and watched this process with my own eyes. He had a sphere of glass about 18" in diameter filled with a liquid, and little bubbles of mercury would rise into it. They would go through a series of fluorescent colors and changes, rise to the top, turn into little balls of solid gold, then sink down to the bottom. Then he would collect all these little balls of gold to use for his spiritual work. He owned an ordinary-looking little house in Burnaby, British Columbia, on an ordinarylooking street. If you drove down the street, his house would look like any of the others. But under his house was a hidden laboratory. He had taken the millions of dollars in gold and dug straight down, building a huge complex filled with everything from electron balances to you-name-it so that he could further his work. He didn’t care about money at all. And of course the purpose in alchemy is not to make gold or money, but to understand the process of how mercury or lead changes into gold.

Success Idea
To be successful at all costs, however, should not be the leading goal in life. Do not sacrifice the virtues that you have been brought up with. Do not scheme, lie, betray confidence, abandon friends, or plot. Even if any of it results in acceleration of career triumphs, you may regret the lack of respect resulting from your behavior. Remember that everything eventually leaks and becomes public. You also have to face yourself in the mirror every morning as you shave or apply makeup – and you want to have respect for the individual you see in the mirror.

Criticizing a book
For me, criticizing a book is not about ego or a need to look smart, but more a matter of being disappointed if an author's lack of craftsmanship ruins my ability to get into the story and enjoy the book. I prefer authors who use English effectively (I think of George R. R. Martin and China Mieville, for example), but I can deal with workmanlike prose if it's basically correct and the ideas are strong (I think of Robin Cook as a prime example of this category). Unfortunately misused vocabulary or glaring grammatical errors can jolt me out of the story pretty quickly, and weak writing coupled with weak ideas can really piss me off. Another thing that can really ruin a book for me is if the characterizations or setting are completely implausible, not because the author intended it that way for effect but because he just did not think it through. Strong writing can make it possible to overlook this, but somehow it seems the authors I've read who really use English well usually do not make this type of mistake. But in any case, I do not call myself a fantasy or sci-fi "fan" and I am not likely to argue with fans unless provoked.
